Nail These 3 Things to Exit for Millions

By Jon Elder
October 28, 2026

Selling your Walmart business is a topic that is criminally underreported on both social media and newsletters.

Today, I'm going to be straight with you and cut through the noise.

You will see all sorts of opinions out there on exiting, but honestly, only 3 things really matter.

When I say "matter," I'm talking about your exit multiple.

Let's say you list your business for sale at $1,000,000 SDE (Seller's Discretionary Earnings). You ask for a 5x multiple, but you know offers will come in lower than that.

So, what moves the needle?

Before I answer that question, I want to remind you of my own story. I used to be like you. Actively growing a brand, doing 7-figures online, and excited to sell to a buyer someday.

I ended up selling my entire ecommerce empire, consisting of 5 brands, in late 2019 for $5 million. I have helped other brands exit themselves, and I'm helping some exit right now.

And three things mattered the most.

1- Actively Growing

I have to mention a few things here because this is not just your top-line revenue number. They want to see your product catalog growing over time, your total revenue, and your tax return numbers. Basically, everything should be growing, and nothing should be stagnating.

A red flag here is if your advertising total has gone down at all. You need to give potential buyers a "story of growth" and have the numbers to back it up. No growth, no strong multiple. It's that simple.

2- Diversified Product Line

It's not enough to have a bunch of variations, although that is attractive too! You need to have a solid variety of products within your brand. Even better is to have multiple brands in multiple product categories, just like I did back in 2019.

Buyers hate risk, and an undiversified product catalog means HUGE risk for them. They like knowing that if one product slows down, two others can take their place and maintain revenue.

In other words, you can't sell creatine products and ONLY creatine products. Fail to do this, and the buyers at large will punish you through a low-ball multiple offer. The market is brutal, and you need to show up prepared.

Side note: No single SKU should account for 10% of your total revenue. Very important!

3- Owner independence

Do you honestly think that buyers want a second job? They want lean and mean. Yes, that means that all of your current employees and third-party solutions will be transferring over.

If you are working 40+ hour weeks on your Walmart business right now, well, you aren't ready to sell yet. Talk about a multiple crusher. Buyers want to see a solid list of SOPs (standard operating procedures) and a clear and realistic work schedule for your team. And don't lie about it! Buyers are smart and will know if you are stretching the truth.

Make it your goal to only work 10-20 hours a week in your business. Honestly, the bulk should be focused on R&D so you can continue to add to your product launch pipeline.

I'm obviously oversimplifying the exit process, but I'm telling you that these are the top 3 things buyers care about when looking at your business. These are the things that matter the most. Everything else is icing on the cake. A cake still tastes amazing without that icing. And the cake is the BULK of the recipe. See what I did there?

Now I'm craving cake...

A Generous Walmart!

Walmart is rolling out the red carpet in 2026 for third-party sellers! While Amazon has frozen its Q4 fees, Walmart has dropped some to ZERO. Yes, you read that right.

Walmart has rolled out targeted referral fee reductions for the holiday period, and the WFS storage structure remains relatively seller-friendly if you manage inventory carefully. Here’s a clear breakdown of the key fees and storage rates that will affect your margins this holiday season!

Referral Fee Incentives for Peak Season

Walmart is offering temporary reductions to help you compete during the busiest shopping months:

  • Toys: 0% referral fee on qualifying items
  • Pet supplies: 50% off the standard rate (bringing most items from 15% down to 7.5%)
  • Top-selling / customer-favorite items (across multiple categories): Up to 100% off referral fees on select qualifying products

WFS Storage Fees During Q4

Storage is charged per cubic foot per month (calculate cubic feet as length × width × height in inches ÷ 1,728).

Here’s the current structure:

January–September (off-peak)
$0.75 per cubic foot per month.

October–December (peak holiday period)

  • Items stored 30 days or fewer: $0.75 per cubic foot per month
  • Items stored more than 30 days: $0.75 + $1.50 = $2.25 per cubic foot per month

Longer-term storage (beyond 365 days) steps up further—$2.25 for 366–450 days and $7.50 beyond that. The big takeaway: High-velocity inventory that turns within about a month in Q4 stays at the low $0.75 rate. Stock that sits longer quickly becomes more expensive. Plan your inbound shipments and sell-through carefully to avoid the higher tier.

In summary, if you sell toys, enjoy the gravy train this Q4!
